Key Nutrients Most Affected by Age-Related Absorption Decline
Vitamin B12
B12 is perhaps the most well-documented absorption challenge in older adults. The vitamin requires a protein called intrinsic factor and adequate stomach acid to be released from food and absorbed in the small intestine. As gastric acid secretion declines — a condition known as atrophic gastritis, which affects an estimated 10–30% of adults over 60 — B12 from animal foods becomes much harder to extract. Crystalline B12, found in fortified foods and supplements, does not require the same acid-dependent process and is generally better absorbed by older adults.
Calcium
Calcium absorption decreases progressively with age, driven partly by lower vitamin D levels and reduced active transport in the intestinal lining. Older adults absorb roughly 25% less calcium from food than younger adults do. This matters considerably for bone density. Spreading calcium intake across meals, rather than consuming it all at once, supports more efficient uptake.
Vitamin D
The skin's ability to synthesize vitamin D from sunlight diminishes with age — older skin produces significantly less vitamin D per unit of sun exposure than younger skin. Iron

Zinc

Atrophic Gastritis
A chronic condition in which the stomach lining becomes inflamed and gradually thins, reducing production of stomach acid and intrinsic factor. It becomes more common with age and significantly impairs absorption of nutrients like vitamin B12 and iron.
Intrinsic Factor
A protein produced by cells in the stomach lining that is required for vitamin B12 to be absorbed in the small intestine. Its production can decline with age or certain stomach conditions.
Non-Heme Iron
The form of iron found in plant-based foods such as legumes, spinach, and fortified grains. It is less readily absorbed than heme iron from animal sources and requires adequate stomach acid for optimal uptake.
Active Transport
A process by which cells use energy to move nutrients — like calcium — across the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. This mechanism becomes less efficient as the intestinal lining ages.
Gut Motility
